10 Easy Decor Tips to Elevate Your House Right Away
Over the past years, I have developed different techniques and rules which improve the look and feel of any interior without having to spend tons of money. The following 10 tips are my top rules when creating breathtaking interior designs that have that little something.
No matter if you’re currently furnishing your home or if it’s already finished. These top tips will help anyone who wants to create an expensive looking interior design.
1. Use different materials and textures
This is probably the top tip we can give. Different materials with different textures create depth and make a space interesting. Here, texture is important in order to have different layers that bring warmth and cosiness into a room. We love working with natural materials such as linen, stone, clay, ceramics, cotton (e.g. musselin), wool, paper, wood or fabric such as bouclé.
2. Paint rooms completely
Instead of painting only one wall, we highly recommend that you paint the full room in the same colour, often including the ceiling too! As always, there are exceptions to the rule but in general, rooms that are painted in the same wall colour look much more expensive, calm, and special than a room with a single painted wall.

3. Work with contrast that is not too harsh
Another thing that makes an interior look and feel expensive is working with contrasts that are not too much. For example, if you use pure white and deep black throughout the interior, this can feel cold and very mainstream. Instead, we would recommend to use different nuances from a certain colour palette to soften the contrast (e.g. beige palette: off-white, cream, beige, greige, etc. combined with dark grey and black). This makes an interior feel much warmer, cosier, and simply more special!
4. Work with different brands and products
If you want your interior to look and feel expensive, please don’t buy everything from only one company or the same furniture for every single room (e.g. same table and same chairs for the dining room, guest room, home office, etc.). In order to create a space that looks and feels expensive, you need different pieces of furniture and decor. Let your furniture pieces stand out and speak for themselves!
5. The rule of three
Something you might have heard of is the rule of 3. If you’re decorating, it is often smart to bundle three decor pieces with different heights in one place (examples below!).
6. Work with limited open spaces to keep it minimalistic
If you want a home to feel expensive, it is often important that it feels clean too. In order to achieve a clean but expensive look, we recommend not to have too many open spaces like open shelves, show-cases, etc. Instead, focus on a few key pieces that you like to display (this can be coffee table books, candles, sculptures/vases, ceramics or other decor pieces). Make sure to not overload a space.
7. Fresh flowers
Another important aspect of interiors that look expensive are usually fresh flowers. Even if it’s only a single stem! Fresh flowers completely change the look and feel of a room.
8. Exclusive art
Selected art pieces are another great way to make a space look expensive – even if the art piece is not expensive at all! Many art pieces can even be done on your own or bought from smaller shops. You can find a selection of our favourite art styles here:
9.Signature home scent
We cannot recommend this enough! How a space smells has so much influence on the feeling and atmosphere of it. Make sure to leave enough fresh air into your home and to work with fragrance diffusers, scented candles, incense sticks or home fragrances. You can find our favourite home scents which we have tested for you here
10. Indirect lighting and lighting that is dimmable
12/10 importance but barely considered when furnishing a home. If you want a cosy, expensive feeling in your home, make sure you work with indirect lighting (table lamps, floor lamps, candles, etc.) and – if possible – have dimmable light bulbs across your home. Nothing makes any interior look worse than a light that is too strong and sterile. You can find our tips on lighting here
