From luxury hotels to private villas – here are the top picks from a luxury interior designer

Europe is home to some of the most luxurious holiday destinations, offering a perfect blend of history, culture, and breathtaking scenery. Whether you’re looking for a five-star hotel experience or a private villa retreat, the continent provides endless options for an unforgettable getaway. From the French Riviera to the Amalfi Coast, let’s explore the top luxury holiday destinations in Europe, the difference between high-end hotels and private villas, and key factors to consider when choosing your ideal escape.

Top Luxury Destinations in Europe

1. French Riviera, France

The French Riviera, or Côte d’Azur, is synonymous with glamour and sophistication. Home to legendary destinations like Nice, Cannes, and Saint-Tropez, it offers pristine beaches, Michelin-starred restaurants, and exclusive nightlife. The region’s luxury resorts and private villas provide breathtaking sea views and first-class amenities.

2. Amalfi Coast, Italy

Italy’s Amalfi Coast is famed for its dramatic cliffs, charming villages, and Mediterranean allure. Whether you stay at the renowned Belmond Hotel Caruso in Ravello or rent a cliffside villa in Positano, you’ll be treated to unparalleled beauty and world-class hospitality.

3. Santorini, Greece

Santorini is the epitome of Greek island luxury. With its iconic white-washed buildings and deep blue waters, it’s a dream destination. Hotels like Canaves Oia provide infinity pools with caldera views, while private villas offer seclusion and romance.

4. Lake Como, Italy

Known for its stunning landscapes and celebrity appeal, Lake Como is perfect for those seeking tranquility and exclusivity. Grand hotels such as the Villa d’Este offer aristocratic elegance, whereas private villas like Villa Balbiano promise privacy and grandeur.

5. Swiss Alps, Switzerland

For those who love winter luxury, the Swiss Alps are unbeatable. Resorts like Gstaad and St. Moritz offer world-class skiing, high-end shopping, and luxurious mountain lodges with private chefs and spas.

Luxury Hotels vs. Private Villas

When planning a luxury getaway, deciding between a five-star hotel and a private villa is crucial. Here’s what you should consider:

Luxury Hotels:

  • Offer top-tier services such as concierge, room service, and fine dining.
  • Provide access to exclusive facilities like spas, infinity pools, and private beaches.
  • Ideal for those who enjoy social atmospheres, curated experiences, and premium hospitality.

Private Villas:

  • Provide privacy, space, and a home-like atmosphere.
  • Many come with personal chefs, housekeeping, and chauffeurs.
  • Ideal for families, honeymooners, or those seeking an exclusive retreat away from crowds.

I personally love the mix of both of the above. I usually choose the type of getaway based on the amount of people I’m traveling with – for example, if I am traveling with a group of friends, then a private villa is often the perfect place to stay at. However, for a luxury getaway as a couple or even on your own, a hotel with all the services you need can be the better choice. Furthermore, booking a villa with multiple people will often come at a better price point, which is why I have included both hotels and villas below.

What to Consider When Choosing a Luxury Getaway

  1. Location: Whether you prefer a seaside retreat, a cultural city experience, or a mountain escape, location is key.
  2. Amenities: Decide if you want spa treatments, a private pool, a personal chef, or exclusive activities like yacht charters.
  3. Season: Some destinations, like the Amalfi Coast, are best visited in spring and summer, while the Swiss Alps shine in winter.
  4. Experience: Consider what kind of luxury you’re seeking—relaxation, adventure, or a mix of both.
  5. Exclusivity: If privacy is your priority, a villa might be the better choice over a resort-style hotel.

A gorgeous private villa for 8 guests in Saint Tropez, South of France. The garden, pool, and perfectly styled villa is a one-of-a-kind location to spend a holiday.

The Most Beautiful Summer Tableware On Earth

While my little Italian barn is far from ready, I just couldn't resist of already getting some beautiful interior design pieces for once it's finished. I can only imagine my life there, sitting on the terrace, overlooking the lake, eating Italian food, and enjoying life. There's still a long journey and even more work ahead, but hey, this tableware lifts my mood so much, AND makes sure to keep me motivated.

I Bought The Most Beautiful House In Italy!

In August 2024, I finally decided it's time for change. Time for a new beginning, time for a new project, and time for a new challenge. While I wouldn't say it was a rushed decision, we did decide quickly which direction we'd wanted to head towards, which was a house to renovate, surrounded by nature, in Northern Italy. I wanted to be close to water, he wanted to be close to the mountains, and anyone who's been to Lake Como knows it combines both. The perfect place to be.
