Different Indoor Doors to Add Character to Your Space
Interior doors play a crucial role in the home decor process. They not only provide privacy and separation but also contribute significantly to the aesthetic appeal of your living space. With a myriad of options available, choosing the right door can be overwhelming. To help you navigate through the choices, here are ten different interior door ideas that can transform your home into a stylish and functional haven.
Over the past years, the importance of indoor doors became clear to me once I saw how much of a difference they can make. Furthermore, doors will elevate any space! With some clients I worked with, changing the doors was sometimes one of the main things their space needed in order to look and feel nice.
1. Neutral Colored Standard Doors
Neutral colored standard doors are a timeless and versatile choice for any home. These doors blend seamlessly with various decor styles, making them a perfect way to maintain a cohesive look throughout your home. Opting for shades like white, beige, gray, or soft pastels can create a calming and sophisticated ambiance. However, neutral colored standard doors are – as the name already shows – often a standard that’s being used without big thoughts going into it. Therefore, they can often look boring (and sometimes even unfitting) when a space is furnished. Additionally, standard doors often don’t have the highest quality, making a space look and feel cheaper.
Nonetheless, neutral colored doors can of course look incredible too, when the right design is being chosen.
Hint: Use neutral colored doors to create a serene bedroom atmosphere. Pair them with matching trims and subtle hardware to maintain a clean and uncluttered look.
2. Colorful Doors
For those who love to make a statement, colorful doors are an excellent choice. Adding a bright color to your doors can inject personality and vibrancy into your home. Whether you choose a bold color like red, blue, or green, or a softer hue like mint or blush, colorful doors can become the focal point of any room. Currently, colorful doors with matching door trims, differing from the wall color, is quite popular. That way, doors are made more special and unique, playing around with details.
Hint: A bright yellow door can energize your living room, while a deep blue can add a touch of elegance. If you want to learn more on how to master a color scheme in your interior design, read here.
3. Doors with Decorative Mouldings
Doors with decorative mouldings are a fantastic way to add architectural interest and sophistication to your home. Mouldings can range from simple and sleek to intricate and ornate, allowing you to choose a style that complements your home decor. Personally, doors with decorative mouldings are my favourite way to make a statement, even though they don’t always have to stand out as much. This type of doors is usually found in historical places such as the typical Viennese “Altbau”. The doors have lovely trims, shapes, are sometimes higher than standard doors and simply look stunning. While doors with decorative mouldings are often kept in neutral colors, I personally think painting them in more bold colors is a very underrated and great way to create a unique, quality home.
Hint: Decorative mouldings can enhance the entrance to your apartment, making it stand out and reflect your personal style.
4. Doors with Patterns
Patterned doors are a creative and unique way to elevate the aesthetic of your interior spaces. From geometric designs to intricate carvings, patterned doors can add texture and depth to your decor. Another favourite of mine, which is finally gaining popularity! Although painting doors in patterns and colors will make the door stand out, they look like a work of art, resulting in an individuated approach to make a unique home. Furthermore, doors with patterns can be a fun addition to a home, making it more fun! I love the examples below!!
Hint: Use patterned doors as feature doors in spaces like the living room or dining area to create a striking visual impact.
5. Vintage Looking Doors
Anyone else admiring these old looking barn doors with the perfect patina that seem to take years to age this way? Well, I’m happy to break it to you but very often, these vintage looking doors are not “actually” vintage! A lot of times, antique looking doors can be purchased in store- new doors that are made to look old.
Vintage looking doors bring a sense of nostalgia and charm to your home. These doors often feature distressed finishes, antique hardware, and classic designs that evoke a bygone era. While vintage doors are not the typical type of doors to include in a home, they can be the perfect fit when the interior design matches this style. Project Greenwood, shown below, has a bunch of vintage sliding doors that really add a massive value to the full interior look. I absolutely love this way of transforming a space easily.
Besides sliding doors, old barn doors can also be used. If you are looking to play with vintage antique doors in your home, make sure to look at the hardware too! Door knobs and handles play a crucial role in order to achieve flawless interactions between the door and the rest of the interior design style.
Hint: Incorporate vintage looking doors in your home to add character and a touch of history to your decor.
6. Loft Doors with Glass and Steel
Loft doors with glass and steel are perfect for modern and industrial-style homes. These doors combine the transparency of glass with the strength of steel, creating a sleek and contemporary look. While loft doors are usually linked to a specific style, I personally think they fit to a range of lifestyles. Furthermore, while the loft style is usually associated with larger, open spaces, I think loft doors can also be implemented in smaller spaces too. Due to the glass elements, they work fantastically as a room divider while not taking away too much light and space.
Loft doors can come in all different kinds of shapes and colors, as they are often customizable.
Hint: Loft doors can provide an accessible luxury feel, offering both functionality and style. They are ideal for separating spaces while maintaining an open and airy feel. My personal favourite: using loft doors to separate bathroom and bedroom!
7. Wood Doors
Wood doors are a classic choice that never goes out of style. Available in various types of wood, such as oak, walnut, and cherry, these doors offer natural beauty and warmth. I usually work with wooden doors when we have a more traditional, vintage style interior. Wood doors are usually associated with a higher quality and are quite popular to use in a common area such as the hallway or living room and kitchen. It’s an easy way to include natural elements in a home!
Hint: Using high-quality wood ensures durability and a premium look. Wood doors can be stained or painted in different colors to match your home decor.
8. Slim Doors
Slim doors are a great solution for spaces where traditional doors might be too bulky. These doors are perfect for small rooms, closets, and pantries, providing functionality without compromising on style. This is another unique trend and I am so here for it! While in Germany and Austria, doors usually have a standard width of 80cm, slim doors can have a customized size and look. Additionally, premium materials such as fabric or wallpaper can make a slim door look extremely elegant and chic.
Furthermore, slim doors can be implemented in any style. Wood doors, loft doors, antique looking doors – everything can be customized as a slim door and add a hint of personality to a space.
Hint: Incorporate slim doors in tight spaces to maximize room while adding a sleek and modern touch.
9. Wide Doors
In contrast to slim doors, another option to add personality and thought to a space can be wide doors. Wide doors can make a space look extremely expensive and elegant. They make a grand statement and are perfect for larger openings, such as between the living room and dining area. They provide a sense of openness and can make moving large furniture easier. Here, different options are available, such as sliding doors, pivot doors, etc.
Hint: Use wide doors to create a seamless flow between rooms, enhancing the overall layout and functionality of your home.
10. Glass Doors
Glass doors are an excellent way to bring natural light into your home and create a sense of openness. They come in various styles, including frosted, clear, and textured glass, offering both privacy and light. Similar to loft doors, glass doors are the more common and more standard solution that used to be a classic choice.
Hint: Integrate glass doors into your home decor process to enhance the brightness and openness of your living spaces. They work well in areas like the kitchen, office, or bathroom.
Conclusion
Choosing the right interior doors is an essential part of the home decor process. Whether you prefer the timeless elegance of neutral colored standard doors or the bold statement of colorful doors, there is an option to suit every style and preference. Doors with decorative mouldings, patterns, or vintage looks can add a touch of sophistication and charm, while loft doors with glass and steel offer a modern and industrial feel.
Wood doors provide natural beauty and durability, while slim and wide doors offer practical solutions for different spaces. Glass doors, on the other hand, bring in light and create a sense of openness. Each door type mentioned above can be tailored to fit your unique home decor needs, making them a perfect way to enhance the aesthetic and functionality of your living space.
Incorporating these diverse interior door ideas into your home can significantly elevate your decor, creating a harmonious and stylish environment. Whether you’re renovating your home or simply looking for new decor solutions, these door ideas offer accessible luxury and a special way to make your home truly your own.
As always, the right door is dependent on different factors. While the general interior design look influences the choice of door, also the general room dimensions and style play another role. For example, a very modern apartment does not suit antique sliding doors. Make sure to carefully evaluate which style works best for your home! If you have questions, you can always reach out to us.
